Barbados has made Rihanna a national hero, as the island country announced its departure of Queen Elizabeth II as the state. It is the first country to do so in nearly three decades.

The country’s prime minister, Mia Mottley presented the Barbadian native as a national hero as Barbados officially became a parliamentary republic Monday, Nov. 29th.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people,” declared Mottley, as she presented the singer as a national hero. “May you continue to shine like a diamond.”

Mottley continued.

“And bring honor to your nation by your words, by your actions, and to do credit wherever you shall go,” stated Mottley. “God bless you, my dear.”

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, the 33-year-old was born in Saint Michael and raised in Barbados’ capital Bridgetown.  Not only did her accomplishments contribute to her prominence in Barbados, but her philanthropic endeavors towards her home nation also have as well.

“This is a day that I will never, ever forget. It’s also a day that I never saw coming,” Rihanna stated in her speech. “I have traveled the world and received several awards and recognitions, but nothing, nothing compares to being recognized in the soil that you grew in.”

Fans of the entertainer shared their excitement of the big accomplishment.

“She always stayed true to her roots and deserves every blessing that has come and will continue to come her way,” one fan tweeted. “Right Honourable Robyn Rihanna Fenty, National Hero of Barbados and serving Ambassador.”

Another fan wrote, “Rihanna went from singing ‘Hero’ in Barbados to becoming a national hero of Barbados.”

Among the other Barbadians that have been previously selected for the National Hero title are social and religious leader Sarah Ann Gill, and genius cricketer Garfield Sobers.

This isn’t the only title that Rihanna holds, she also earned the title of Official Ambassador for Culture and Youth in 2018.

Following her 2007 mega-hit “Umbrella,” which cemented her prominence as one of the top pop stars, Barbados’ then Prime Minister David Thompson established Rihanna Day, which will take place annually.
