Say hello to the new face of Batwoman!

Javicia Leslie will be TV’s first Black woman to play the leading role of Batwoman. The CW announced the actress as the newly casted lead on Wednesday. Leslie will follow Ruby Rose, who held the role in the first season of the series.

“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in a quote to Variety.

Javicia was naturally excited to share the news with fans — particularly Black girls looking for representation of superheroes on the screen.

“For all of the little Black girls dreaming to be a superhero one day… it’s possible,” she captioned in an Instagram post announcing the news.

Leslie’s no stranger to the Batwoman production team, having also worked with co-producers Berlanti Productions for two seasons on the CBS God Friended Me drama, where she played Ali Finer.
