Sanaa Lathan has taken a seat in the director’s chair.

Lathan will make her feature directorial debut on Paramount Player’s adaptation of Angie Thomas‘ New York Times bestseller, On the Come Up.

According to Deadline, the film is a priority for Paramount Players as they were impressed with the Nappily Ever After actress’ vision for the film.

Thomas is no stranger to book adaptations as her 2017 novel, The Hate U Give, was adapted into a feature film starring Amandla Stenberg the following year.

According to the book’s official description, 16-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend

The film focuses on 16-year-old Bri as she sets out to be the greatest rapper of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who passed before making it big, Bri has large shoes to fill. From being labeled a hoodlum at school to coming home to an empty fridge: the obstacles that are stacked against Bri make it hard for her to catch her big break.

That is until she pours her anger and frustration into her first song. As the song goes viral for all of the wrong reasons, she finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri has no other option than to make it — even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

Lathan is currently set to appear in the third season of HBO’s Succession and star in Netflix’s Hit & Run.
