Keys was disheartened by her son being deterred and worried about being judged by others at such a young age.

“And I was like, ‘Why? You were so sure. You were good.’ And he was like, ‘People are not gonna like it.’ Can you believe this? 4 years old. He’s 4!”

Genesis feeling like he is limited due to his gender bothered Keys.

“The way I see it, there [are] masculine and there are feminine energies inside of us all, period,” the Keys said. “It’s really frustrating to me. I’m actually really, really frustrated about it. I ask myself, ‘Why is that? Why can’t we just express the different energies that are inside us?’…We should be able to explore and express [our masculine and feminine energies] however we want to.”

In the end, Keys encouraged Genesis to trust his decision and told him he isn’t the only boy that likes colorful nails.

“Less Labels, More Expressions,” Keys captioned her post. “Been thinking about how over labeled and over judged we all are… can u feel me??”
