Despite delivering her infamous powerful performances on-screen, the 56-year-old shares that portraying the former first lady was terrifying.
“It was terrifying but an incredible honor to portray this extraordinary woman,” Davis states on Twitter.
The first season of “The First Lady” focuses on three former first ladies and their contributions. The series will focus on Michelle Obama during her husband Barack Obama’s presidential terms. Actress Michelle Pfeiffer will portray Betty Ford. And actress Gillian Anderson will play the role of Eleanor Roosevelt.
“I feel very protective of Michelle,” Davis shares in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s our job as actors not to judge whoever we are portraying, but I ended up thinking she’s just dope.”
To prepare for this role, Davis takes a deep dive into learning Michelle’s mannerisms, cadence of voice, and gestures.
As the pictures of Davis portrayal of the former first lady, fans took to Twitter.
One user wrote, “Viola Davis has got Michelle Obama’s smirk down.”
Another fan pointed out the quality of the makeup/wardrobe brought to the project.
“Makeup was not playing with the ‘Michelle O’ eyebrow on Viola.”
In 2020, as the show got greenlit, the president of entertainment at Showtime Networks, Jana Winograde, shares her excitement to have the Triple Crown Acting recipient onboard.
“Having Viola Davis play Michelle Obama is a dream come true,” Winograde expresses to Deadline. “We couldn’t be luckier to have her extraordinary talent to help launch this series.”
The show is slated to premiere in Spring 2022. Davis is an executive producer, alongside Jeff Gaspin.
