California just made history! Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced the state’s first-ever surgeon general, and her name is Dr. Nadine Burke Harris.

In a press release, Newsom said that the pediatrician will focus on combating the root causes of serious health conditions and use her office to reach young families across the state. Not only is Nadine a qualified doctor, but she is the founder of the Center for Youth Wellness, an organization in San Francisco devoted to making sure children’s health is intact, especially ones who suffer from toxic stress and trauma. In addition, she previously served as an advisor on the Let’s Get Healthy California Task Force, and as a member of the Boys and Men of Color Trauma Advisory Committee, according to Lake County News.

This isn’t the first time the author of “The Deepest Well” will work with the governor. He formerly appointed Harris to the San Francisco Citizens’ Committee for Community Development when he was the city’s mayor.

The child health advocate will be sworn in on February 11, and so many people are rooting for her, even Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee:

You go, girl!
