The funniest people I know are Black women. So I never fully bought that story that “Saturday Night Live,” was having a hard time finding Black comedians to participate on their show.

Maybe they were just looking for a different type of humor. After all, I know that many Black women who regularly tune into SNL. Everything ain’t for everybody.

Thankfully, now there’s a solution.

According to Shadow and Act, Robin Thede has partnered with HBO. The network ordered her idea, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” straight to series. and Issa Rae will executive produce.

The series, a half-hour comedy sketch show will, like its name describes, “will feature narrative sketches performed by a core cast of Black women—including Thede herself—as well as other celebrity guests.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be the “first sketch comedy in TV history to be written by, directed by and starring an array of Black women.”

Lauren Ashely Smith, a head writer BET’s “The Rundown with Robin Thede,” will reprise the role as well as co-executive producer for the Black Lady Sketch Show.

Thede’s BET show was highly acclaimed but was canceled because it wasn’t bringing in the ratings the network desired.

But Thede, who was optimistic in the midst of her termination, has since gone on to host the Television Critics Association Awards. And in addition to this HBO news, she also has a comedy project in development at ABC.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted about this show as more details become available.
