Missy Elliott is making history by becoming the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. It was announced on CBS This Morning today (Jan. 12) that she was apart of the 2019 class.
It’s only right for Elliott to be given such an honor. Throughout her almost three-decade career, she has not only penned her own hits but has also written songs for Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Jazmine Sullivan, Mariah Carey, Ciara, and Janet Jackson. All her albums have been certified platinum or more and she has sold over 30 million records.
The five-time Grammy winner gushed on Twitter about her latest achievement.
“I want to CONGRATULATE all the AMAZING songwriters who have been inducted into the 2019 Song Writers Hall of Fame,” she wrote on Twitter. “Also those who were nominated because their body of work is AMAZING. I AM SO HUMBLY GRATEFUL to now be inducted also. I [love] you all.”
The Virginia spitter is the third rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Jay Z was inducted in 2017 and Jermaine Durpi entered in 2018.
Other 2019 inductees include Monica, Dallas Austin, Pink, Madonna and Boyz II Men.
The induction ceremony will be on June 13th, 2019 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
