Mary J. Blige’s musical contributions to the R&B and hip-hop culture have put her in a lane of her own. From her soulful love ballads to her upbeat hip-hop-infused songs and, of course, her special dance moves, MJB is a whole vibe. Since 1991, the singer, actress, and philanthropist has bared her soul to her fans and remained unapologetically herself.

Then, there’s her style. When it comes to hair, Mary set trends with her signature blonde locks. From the 1990s to the present, Mary continues to be a trend-setter, making bold moves in fashion. In 1991, she gave feminine tomboy vibes when she hit the airwaves with Real Love’s upbeat song. In the video, she sported a baseball shirt, tennis skirt, knee and elbow pads, a baseball cap, with her curly golden locks. As her style has evolved over the years, she continues to remain true to herself. Recently, the actress gave serious lewks for the September/October Issue of Cultured Magazine.

As Mary J. Blige jumps into her 50th year of life, we’re convinced she is only getting better. In honor of the R&B and hip-hop legend’s birthday, we counted down five times Mary J. Blige did it for the culture.

Fresh into her career, Mary J. Blige performed at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. The singer rocked the oversized look but kept the look tomboy-chic with her curly locs, hoop earrings, and long nails. I wonder if she’s ever looked back on this moment and thought, I’m going to be an award-winning musician with over 250 awards in my honor.

Mary looked like a model straight out of Hype Hair Magazine in this photo. The singer has always kept her hair fresh and at the top of Black hair trends. She added her personality to this look with the asymmetrical bangs. And, of course, no Mary J. Blige hairstyle would be complete without her signature blonde color.

This is one of the most memorable fashion moments in Mary J. Blige’s career. Although simple, her iconic animal print blouse and shawl combo, paired with matching pants was a genius look. She accessorized it with black gloves and sunglasses. This ensemble is just as hot now as it was in 1992.

Mary’s current approach to fashion is grown, sexy, with a side of sparkle. Over the last few years, she’s made thigh-high boots a staple in her wardrobe. We love how she accentuates her long toned legs with a pair of statement-making shoes.
