In July 2020, reports revealed that Zendaya, John David Washington, and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson shot an entire film during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Six months following and the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming film, Malcolm & Marie, is here and it explores the ups and downs of being in love.
“This is not a love story,” reads the trailer. “This is a story of love.” The film, which was shot in an environmentally conscious ranch in California from June 17 to July 2, follows filmmaker Malcolm (Washington) and Marie (Zendaya) after they return home from a film premiere. As they await the movie reviews, their love is tested as they grapple with what it really means to be in a loving and committed relationship.
“You are by far the most excruciating, difficult, stubbornly obnoxious woman I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Malcolm energetically shares to a toned-down Marie. “I f——g love you.”
The Euphoria actress teased the film after news of the production broke with a simple yet sexy post of her and the BlacKkKlansman actor.
After production for Levinson’s hit HBO show was halted as a result of the pandemic, the Emmy-winning actress asked Levinson to create a project to keep all of them busy and more importantly to keep the crew from filing for unemployment. According to Deadline, “…Euphoria crew and producers who would have otherwise been unemployed worked for ownership alongside the filmmakers and stars, who invested their money to make possible the $4 million film.”
Malcollm & Marie marks the first post-pandemic film to wrap and none of the cast nor crew got sick during the making of the movie. Costumes were provided by the actors and they abided by strict hygiene standards. Watch the trailer below:
