Lena Waithe and finacé Alana Mayo are officially married!

The Queen & Slim writer revealed that she secretly married her longtime partner on a recent episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“We snuck and did it,” she told John Legend, who served as the guest host of the show. “We didn’t make any announcements.”

For their nuptials, the couple went to the San Francisco courthouse and married in front of the Harvey Milk bust.

“It was her idea like all good things are,” Waithe told Legend. “And she was just driving, and she saw the courthouse. And she said we should get married there. And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.’”

Waithe told Legend that the location held a great significance for the LGBTQ community.

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in 1977. He served almost 11 months in office and established himself as a leading political activist for the gay community before later being killed in the San Francisco City Hall. Since then, the building has become a symbol for the community, with the first legal same-sex marriage ceremony officiated at the courthouse in 2004.

The location has “so much history in our community,” she told Legend. “And it really was a humbling day to marry someone so amazing, but then also to appreciate the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that.”

Waithe, who became engaged on Thanksgiving Day 2017, told Legend that Thanksgiving has a “real significance in my life.”

She won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the “Thanksgiving” episode on the “Master of None” series on Netflix. The episode details Denise’s coming out as a lesbian throughout the years and their growing, yet resistant acceptance.

“I obviously wrote some things about Thanksgiving and coming out.”

She proposed to partner, Alana, on Thanksgiving in Tokyo.

“And now the movie, Queen & Slim, comes out on Thanksgiving,” she told Legend.

It looks like these two will have much to celebrate for the holiday.
